Product Description
One of the smallest, and best species to keep, Three Striped Mud Turtles (Kinosternon baurii), are a joy to have in a tank. They are very active, learn to recognize their keepers, and forage endlessly along the bottom of their tank. With the typical adult size of barely four inches, these are one of the world's smallest turtles. They are tiny when born - and well started hatchlings are only an inch long at best ...
Also known as Striped Mud Turtles, they are found from coastal South Carolina and Georgia, south through peninsular Florida and the Keys. Because much of their range has been heavily developed in recent decades, habitat destruction and road kills have threatened this species significantly. All range states now appropriately protect this species. Captive breeding of Three Striped Mud Turtles has made great strides in recent years - and they are now more available.
Three Striped Mud Turtles do not need a large tank - well started hatchlings are very small, and do well in the smallest of tanks, and a 20 gallon "long"aquarium can easily house 2 or 3 adults for life.
They like shallow water, with a bit of gravel & lots of underwater "tank furniture" (plastic plants, rocks, logs etc.). We raise ours on pellets, occasionally giving them cut fish, cut beef heart and small earth worms. They happily take any type of protein food, and they enjoy small insects & crustaceans - and will learn to eat from your hand, if you like. They get along with any similar sized mud or musk turtles -and because we save and raise them up to go with turtles you may already have - or to put them in a larger tank, we have them available in several sizes.
Remember, each turtle order comes with a free starter sample of the same Turtle diet your Turtle has been raised on - this will last one small turtle a few weeks - to order larger quantities, see the lower left side of this page. *

Hatching purchase
Turtle arrived quickly and was well packaged. Updates weren't timely and turtle arrived without food. Description said it would come with food to help transition to new home. I would purchase from here again.

Three Striped Mud
I received the three striped mud turtle hatchling with no problems and with excellent delivery service. He is so tiny and adorable, and settled in nicely after I received him along with another turtle. He ate right away and was checking out his new enclosure right away. I’m a fan of small turtles as I enjoy watching them and they make great pets, will be much loved.

Three Striped Mud Turtle
We've had Crush our 3 striped mud turtle since December 2013. He has been the funniest, craziest, and most personable turtle we've ever met. He loves everything food related and even though he has moved houses and tanks, he's remained the same funny guy. He's a riot and we cannot thank the Turtle Source enough for such a great pet that we can't wait to have for many more decades!!

fantastic babies
I got a pair of males one yearling and one hatchling back in 2017 and they are absolutely delightful. I'm hoping that if the gal I had prior ends up having oopsie eggs from my inattention during a tank cleaning I can grow my muddy family <3

Three-Striped Mud Turtle
Everything was great. Only complaint was that I couldn’t get a response from their phone number. I wanted to call to find out what size the turtle I bought would be so I knew what enclosure I had to have set up. Everything else was great though. Turtle arrived healthy and fast

Three Striped Mud Turtle (Hatchling)
I was very impressed that Turtle Source researched the weather by my zip code to accommodate the best temperature for shipment to arrive at my door steps. The little guy arrived very healthy and ready for the water! I would definitely be looking forward to future turtles or tortoises from them. Thank you from a satisfied customer in Arizona!

active, very cute turtle
Shipping was fast and the packaging was very well done. The hatchling arrived healthy and ready to explore. It was scared for a while but roams the tank freely now (about a week later). Does not utilize basking area, but enjoys sitting under the heat lamp while still submerged water. Eats shrimp, snails, and even a little spinach. Only eats the pellets if she is very hungry. And be careful! Bites when handled.
