Product Description
One of the smallest, and best species to keep, Three Striped Mud Turtles (Kinosternon baurii), are a joy to have in a tank. They are very active, learn to recognize their keepers, and forage endlessly along the bottom of their tank. With the typical adult size of barely four inches, these are one of the world's smallest turtles. They are tiny when born - and well started hatchlings are only an inch long at best ...
Also known as Striped Mud Turtles, they are found from coastal South Carolina and Georgia, south through peninsular Florida and the Keys. Because much of their range has been heavily developed in recent decades, habitat destruction and road kills have threatened this species significantly. All range states now appropriately protect this species. Captive breeding of Three Striped Mud Turtles has made great strides in recent years - and they are now more available.
Three Striped Mud Turtles do not need a large tank - well started hatchlings are very small, and do well in the smallest of tanks, and a 20 gallon "long"aquarium can easily house 2 or 3 adults for life.
They like shallow water, with a bit of gravel & lots of underwater "tank furniture" (plastic plants, rocks, logs etc.). We raise ours on pellets, occasionally giving them cut fish, cut beef heart and small earth worms. They happily take any type of protein food, and they enjoy small insects & crustaceans - and will learn to eat from your hand, if you like. They get along with any similar sized mud or musk turtles -and because we save and raise them up to go with turtles you may already have - or to put them in a larger tank, we have them available in several sizes.
Remember, each turtle order comes with a free starter sample of the same Turtle diet your Turtle has been raised on - this will last one small turtle a few weeks - to order larger quantities, see the lower left side of this page. *

Beautiful Hatchlings
We recently received 2 beautiful hatchlings and they arrived in perfect condition. They both started eating within a day and are very lively, swimming and exploring their new tank with their new tank buddy. We are super happy with the quality and care from the Turtle Source and definitely recommend purchasing your new pet from them!

Three striped turtle
Came earlier then expected. Packing was secured properly. My three striped mud was secure with no imperfections not stuck to the paper towel it came with. My pet was lively and very active. I highly recommend the turtle source. I Will definitely order my turtles from them again.

Terrible Customer Service
I’m so disappointed to have to write this review as I had high hopes for this company. I received my turtle hatchling as scheduled. It all went downhill from there. The little turtle was found in a sealed plastic deli container with no air holes on a dry folded paper towel. There were no cool or warm packs in the box and as for any immediate care instructions, only the invoice for the purchase was included with a note to visit the website for answers to any questions. I have had more care enclosed in a box for a $25 goldfish that The Turtle Source sent. After pursuing the website for care instructions I found NOTHING about just arriving care so I telephoned TTS customer service and was sent to voicemail where I left a thorough message with my telephone number clear and complete.. I left a total of three that day, the final was after their closing hours in hopes to catch someone. After a third message you’d think the next day I’d get a call back. NO CALL. I don’t understand how someone dealing with live animals could care so little about them. It breaks my heart this company is so bad. Two days later I’ve still had no return call. I’ve had to reach out to TTS competitors for support which has been kindly and professionally given. Shame on you at TTS. I hope future customers read this and are prepared for no follow up or after purchase support.

Mud turtle missing front fingers
The mud turtle is lively , however both hands are missing fingers. I contacted the support and did not receive a response, I’m not sure if it’s a birth defect or the turtle was kept in poor condition
