Product Description

Hermann's Tortoises, (Testudo Hermanni) are found in the woodlands, rocky hillsides and meadows of Southern Europe, Spain, Turkey, the Balkans, and Bulgaria. Hermann's Tortoises are also found on many islands in the Mediterranean Sea. They prefer heavy vegetation but not wet areas.

One of the smaller tortoises, most adults reach 5 - 7 inches after many years. Hermann's Tortoises are primarily herbivores, readily eating vegetables, dark leafy greens, and grasses. Their favorite foods include clover, beans and squash. They will also eat some insects, earth worms and slugs. We give ours tortoise diet mixed with veggies and a good calcium supplement. Indoors, a good UVB basking bulb and a basking spot of 90 - 95F is needed. Our juveniles are soaked 3 times each week for 10 minutes in warm, shallow water.

Mild mannered in comparison to other species, Hermann's Tortoises are very personable little tortoises. They learn to come to their keepers at feeding time, and do well with several other tortoise species.

Top photo shows a 9 week old juvenile. Middle photo shows a hatchling along with a slightly younger sibling who emerged from his egg an hour later. The bottom photo shows a 12 week old juvenile on top of one of our breeders (Breeders not for sale).
