Aldabra Tortoise - Young Adults: Geochelone gigantea

Category: Rare & Exotic

30 Day Tortoise Health Guarantee

Every once in a while a larger Aldabra or two becomes available. We have 2 such very pretty giants. Both are 13 years old. One is 26 inches, 100 pounds, and looks and behaves like a female. She has one small extra scute on the very rear of her shell (photo available) and is otherwise flawless. Her price is $9995. The second is 30 inches long, 148 pounds, is also 13 years old, looks and behaves like a male and has a flawless shell. His price is $12,995. Both of these tortoises were born in the Seychell Islands in 1999, from different clutches/parents, and have been raised together all their lives. Aldabra Tortoises need to be about 20 years old before their gender can be properly determined. Until that age, tail size gives some indication, behavior - out word for males, and more subdued for females, is a very good preliminary indicator. These are not 100% indicators - but experts agree, they are very reliable - especially as they get older... These specific tortoises are pictured in our photos to the left. If you've ever given serious though to keeping the world's largest tortoise species - here is your chance to hit the ground running with two very impressive, very large Aldbras.

Each of the two Aldabras can either be picked up here in South Florida, or shipped in a custom made oak/pine wooden crate ($95 per crate - below our cost). Shipping, on Delta Airlines to your nearest airport is additional - and is at cost - approximately $300 per tortoise. Due to the high value and involved logistics, these tortoises must be ordered by phone - thank you.

Aldabra tortoises, Geochelone gigantea (meaning“huge land turtle) are the world's second largest living tortoise species. Found only in the Indian Ocean, on the coral- limestone Aldabra Atoll. A colony was reintroduced to the Seychelles islands in the late 1970's as a tourist attraction. The original Seychelles Giant Tortoises had been eaten out of existence by the end of the nineteenth century. Aldabra Tortoises thrive in grasslands, mangrove swamps and costal dunes; and enjoy mud wallows and ponds to beat the heat. Shade is also important for Aldabra Tortoises.

Aldabra's are primarily vegetarian, but will eat meat/carrion when available. Their main diet consists of grasses, dark leafy greens (e.g. dandelions, mustards, collards, turnips, kales), occasionally pears, carrots, peaches, apples, beans, peas, almonds and tomato's - red foods are a favorite.

Truly a dinosaur of the tortoise world, in warmer months plan to give them land. Aldabra Tortoises are shy at first, but soon become accustomed to their keepers. Juveniles grow quickly at first, and need good sized pens both indoors and out. A wonderful addition for keepers able to devote space to keep a very rare and interesting animal. Aldabra Tortoises develop very distinctive personalities and become more like family members as they get older. Several recorded specimens have lived over 200 years...
