Description

Hermann's Tortoises, (Testudo hermanni) are found in the woodlands, rocky hillsides and meadows of southern Europe from Spain to Turkey, the Balkans and Bulgaria. Hermann's tortoises are also found on many islands in the Mediterranean Sea. They prefer heavy vegetation but not wet areas.

One of the smaller tortoises, most adults reach 5 - 7 inches after many years. Hermann's Tortoises are primarily herbivores, readily eating vegetables, dark leafy greens and grasses. Favorite foods include clover, beans and squash. They will also eat some insects, earth worms and slugs. We give ours Tortoise diet mixed with veggies and a good calcium supplement. In doors, a good UVB basking bulb and a basking spot of 90 - 95 f is needed. Our juveniles are soaked 3 times each week for 10 minutes in warm, shallow water.

Milder mannered than many other species, Hermann's Tortoises are a very personable little tortoise. They learn to come keepers at feeding time, and do well with several other tortoise species.
