Product Description
Speke's Hingeback tortoises are likely the heartiest and most personable of the 6 African hinge-backed tortoise species. Only growing to about 7.5 inches, they are an excellent apartment/condo species.
Also known as the Savanna hinge-back tortoise, Speke's are found in a wide range of rocky to tropical habitats from Mozambique to South Africa, including nearly all of Zimbabwe...This is a very handsomely shaped tortoise, with classic curves, the full functioning hinge, and lots of contrasting color variations - and breeding sized adults show hints of pinks and blues on their heads and necks...(see our pics)
Speke's hingeback tortoises are mostly herbivores, but they also appreciate the occasional (once a week) snail or insect - ours like night crawlers, along with a regular diet of lettuce and other greens, yellow & green squash, tomato, cactus & even pumpkin and some mushrooms...
Very easy to keep, this friendly little tortoise species is disappearing in many parts of it's range, and is one that breeders are only beginning to work with - so availability is very limited.
