Until recently, very little was known about this pretty turtle species only found in the Congo Basin of central Africa.
Pelusios carinatus, the African Keeled Mud Turtle, wasn't even scientifically described until 1956...
Their natural habitat is made up of rivers, lakes, lagoons and the quiet backwaters of what is now the Democratic Republic Of The Congo.
Only a few US breeders work with this colorful species who hatch with bright yellow colors all over their heads and a pretty yellow ring around their top shells (plastron) all on a solid black background.
In a tank or a pond they do fine in relatively shallow water with lots of "break up" (plastic plants, logs & rocks) to explore.
They very enthusiastically take pellets, fish, worms and as they get older some vegetation. They get along fine with many other species, especially the more docile of the other African Mud Turtle species.
As they grow they develop a very pronounced high ridge or keel along the center top of their shells - hence their name. From their very pretty hatchling colors all the way up to their 6"-7" adult size, African Keeled Mud Turtles are very inquisitive and personable and make excellent pet additions to anyone's natural collections - they are truly a taste of central Africa - right in your home to study & enjoy...
