Product Description

Spiny Softshells are very good community turtles. They're excellent swimmers and do well in partly or mostly water tanks, with plants and other under water objects. They will lie buried in sand with just their head exposed waiting to surprise prey. They quickly settle in and will swim very actively about their tanks.

Spiny Softshells quickly learn to come to feeding and will liven up any tank. They are mainly carnivores taking fish, pellets, worms, meat, and crustaceans. Once four to five inches, they also make good pond turtles.

    Spiny softshell turtle hatchling

Posted by Marsha Peterson on Apr 22nd 2023

First of all, I would recommend not referring to any living creature as a "product". The shipping and packing were fine and since the state is Florida and the weather was mild, there was no danger of temperature stress from the short trip. The hatchling seems to be in good health and is eating, burying itself in the sand, etc. so all is well. By the way, the word "Reviews" is a simple plural which does not require an apostrophe indicating possessive case. Try for literacy in all your communications, it sounds more professional. We received two yearling Spiny Softshell turtles in great condition and started easting tilapia after four days. Great place for turtles with top notch customer service as well when we had questions.

    Turtle is Fine, No Communication

(Copy and pasted from website review) My experience wasn't great. I ordered a hatchling spiny softshell turtle about a month ago, and scheduled delivery for Jan 26th, because that was the only day I could be home to get the package. The day before, they emailed me saying that the weather was simply going to be too cold that day for the turtle to be safe during transport, and they do not ship turtles when the temperatures will be less than 30°. That was alright. I rescheduled delivery for February 15th, a day where someone would be home to recieve the package, and all seemed well. However, I was surprised with an email last night informing me that my turtle was shipped and will be arriving the next day. This was horrible news, as I work 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday. I emailed them right away stating there has been a mistake and I can't get the turtle tomorrow. That email was ignored (and they still haven't replied). You would think with delivery being within 24 hours, that they would keep a close eye on their emails in case of emergency. What if I was going to be out of town until the 15th and they never read the email? I was stressing out about it all day today at work, worrying that the turtle would freeze to death. I live in mid Michigan and it is winter. Granted, today was a warmer day compared to the last few weeks, being about 35°-45° all day. Still too cold for a turtle even with "heat packs" (which is just a hand warmer zip-tied to the top of the box). They even said that someone would have to be available to get the turtle when it arrived, but apprently this was ignored. Luckily, the turtle was alive, but it was lethargic and was barely moving and had it's eyes shut. Normally a turtle being picked up would be either trying to hide in its shell, or kicking its feet and trying to flee. This turtle sat limp and was ice cold. I'm lucky I was able to get off of work early or else the turtle could have froze to death. It was in a cup with a moist paper towel, which I would guess is for hydration, but in this weather it was very cold. It definitely would have been less of a risk for the turtle to be without moisture for 24 hours than be sitting on a wet, frozen paper towel. The towel was almost a leather like texture because it was so cold. I don't see how they can't ship a turtle when it is 30° outside and there is someone there to take it inside right away, but they can deliver a turtle when it's 35° out and set it on the porch to sit for hours. I do understand that some of these mistakes 'could' have been UPS's fault, but I tend to blame The Turtle Source because if they would have better communication among the employees there and with me, the turtle would have been shipped and delivered on Wednesday, February 15th as planned. Also, the turtle has a white scar on it's neck which I'm assuming was a wound that was inflicted by another turtle and healed over. Not a good thing to see on an animal. Not a big deal to me, but it could show that perhaps their tanks/enclosures at their facility are over crowded or not well taken care of. That being said, my turtle is alive and is swimming around exploring his new enclosure, but it went through freezing his little turtle butt off when it could have been avoided. I definitely would either find a breeder you can meet in person, or another company to buy from. Most of it was alright, but the communication just wasn't there. Wish I could have had a better experience and left a better review. That being said, my turtle is otherwise healthy and is basking and getting along with his tank mates. The turtle itself is great and I love him, but I strongly recommend going somewhere else for your turtle.

Outstanding specimen. The hatchling arrived in perfect condition. Basking and eating within 2 days of arrival. The customer service from the Turtle Source is a 10 out of 10. The Turtle Source is my go to for purchasing turtles and tortoises.
