White-Lipped Mud Turtles (Hatchlings/Juveniles): Kinosternon leucostomumCategory: Mud and Musk Turtles DescriptionWhite Lipped Mud Turtles are a seldom seen - and almost never bred turtle. They swim in quiet rivers, ponds, swamps and lagoons of Mexico, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Colombia. A mid sized Mud Turtle, adults reach about six inches. Their oval shaped shell colors range from brown to yellow (& occasionally black), and they their plastron (bottom shell) color ranges from tan to yellow/orange. Their heads and mouths have several light colored markings (hence their name). Not common in the US, this personable turtle begins life as a very shy little hatchling - and becomes a very outgoing and friendly tank dweller by it's second year. They are true omnivores and eat more and more plant/vegetable matter as they get older - our hatchlings take pellets, fish, earth worms and a bit of romaine lettuce and other greens. Their scientific name, Kinosternon leucostmum, means "movable breast" (referring to their hinged bottom shell) with a "white mouth"... Our breeding project of White Lipped Mud Turtles is only about 5 years old, and we hatch just a handful of these interesting turtles each year. They are not aggressive, and do very well in glass tanks with similar sized Mud and Musk Turtles. * Remember, each turtle order comes with a free starter sample of the same Turtle diet your Turtle has been raised on - this will last one small turtle a few weeks - to order larger quantities, see the lower left side of this page. * Restricted StatesOR Terms & ConditionsPlease read and review carefully before purchasing.
