Yellow Footed Tortoises (Adult ): Geochelone denticulataCategory: General Experience Level: Starter [?] Care Sheet: Juvenile Tortoises
DescriptionOur Adult Yellow-footed Tortoises are eight - twelve year olds from 13 - 16 inches shell length. They weigh 16 - 22 pounds. Each is full breeding size, and is ready for out door pens in warmer months. They do prefer humid environments and easy access to both sun and shade. Temperatures from 55 at night, up to 100 during the day are fine for them. Many northern keepers keep them in their basements for colder months. A hide box can keep them outside on chilly nights, add heat and they can stay out so long as the box is 55 to 80 inside. This size is too big for raccoons and other predators to bother. Gender can easily be selected for your order. They are great with all larger tortoises from 10 inches up. Their description and husbandry follows: Yellow-footed Tortoises inhabit the dense rainforests of South America and the Caribbean islands. Like Red footed tortoises, Yellow foots are very intelligent and quickly learn where food, shelter and good basking are found. Yellow-foots tend to be both more active and more secretive than Red-foots. Being more active, they can be a little more fragile than Red-foots, if not kept at fairly constant temperatures and humidity levels. In nature, Yellow-foots' diet includes grasses, fruits, some insects and earth worms. Tortoise diet mixed with greens, veggies, fruits, and a calcium supplement suites them well. With a little patience, Yellow-foots can quickly learn to eat from your hand. Yellow foots, thrive with other tortoise species. Shallow, warm water soaking every third day, a warm basking spot and plenty of food is the key for these very personable starter tortoises. Slightly moistened substrate works best for Yellow-foots. Natural sunlight in warmer months, or good UV basking bulbs indoors are important. They enjoy lots of humidity and even warm rains. Care must be taken to avoid cold temperatures when keeping Yellow-foots. Yellow foots (Geochelone denticulata) have been one of the most popular species for tortoise keepers for decades. Just follow their care sheets, and they are a pleasure to keep. * Remember, each Tortoise order comes with a free starter sample of the same Tortoise diet your Tortoise has been raised on - to order larger quantities, see the lower left side of this page. * * Remember, each Tortoise order comes with a free starter sample of the same Tortoise diet your Tortoise has been raised on - to order larger quantities, see the lower left side of this page. * Terms & ConditionsPlease read and review carefully before purchasing.
